Pennsylvania Safety & Emissions

Safety Inspection

To become a certified Safety Inspector in Pennsylvania, you must be at least 18 years of age,
have a valid driver’s license, attend a PennDOT-approved certification course and successfully complete the prescribed tests. Please check the list of Approved Safety School in Pennsylvania for locations.  

Safety Recertification

You must recertify your safety inspection license every five years through an online exam. You will receive a renewal letter in the mail 180 days prior to the expiration of your inspector license. You must take and pass your exam prior to the expiration of your inspector license. You have three attempts to pass the exam. Should you fail to pass in each of those attempts, you will be required to retake the initial baseline exam and tactile test at a PennDOT-approved school. Emissions Inspection

To become a certified Emission Inspector in Pennsylvania, you must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, attend a PennDOT-approved certification course and successfully complete the prescribed tests. Please check the list of Approved Emissions Schools in Pennsylvania for locations.
