Mechanical Division Director
Dave Carney
I have been interested in all things mechanical since I can remember. My dad
owned a speed shop when I was young and then an auto repair shop. Some of my earliest
memories are of climbing tire piles of M&H drag slicks and stacks of Cragar
Wheels.
At the age of 14, I secured my first real job as a stock boy for a NAPA parts
store.
After high school, I attended West Virginia University in the Mining and Mineral
Engineering program. This was the result of my Dad wanting better for me. He
didn’t want me having to turn wrenches all my life like he did, but that are exactly
what I wanted to do. So after a lot of arguing, I finished my freshmen year of
college but never went back and never regretted it.
That next fall I attended Vale Technical Institute and graduated at the top of
my class. After graduating Vale, I went to work for my Dad. He owns a very successful,
modernized auto repair shop. You would think that it would be a no-brainer to
work for your Dad and then someday take over the reins, but that is not the way
it always works out. Again, no regrets.
In 1999, I decided to open my own repair shop. Crazy, right? The result is
that I am now the proud owner of Carney’s Auto Repair Service in Uniontown, PA. That same year I joined AASP-PA after meeting Dennis Wince at a scan tool shootout
held at his shop. I am a member of Chapter 10 in Westmoreland County. I’ve served
as a delegate for about eight years and have been a Chapter Vice-President for
about four years. I currently hold ASE Master and L1 Emissions Certifications.
Being a member of AASP-PA has been invaluable. I don’t know of any other way
I could have learned as much about our ever changing industry. The meetings,
seminars, classes, and trade shows have all the tools available for anyone willing
to learn. They are also places to meet and get to know our colleagues. My fellow
AASP-PA members are always willing to listen and offer advice for any situation
I have found myself. This in itself is priceless.
